Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the philosophy behind ShapeShift workout?
A: Our philosophy is that through a little anatomical education and physical application, we can improve the condition of our bodies and the way we feel, making for a better quality of life. At ShapeShift, we work holistically with people on their mind, body and spirit to achieve greater overall body awareness. By teaching clients awareness of their form and posture, then applying it to their actual physical practice, we help them improve every aspect of their life. They grow stronger both mentally and physically, resulting in greater happiness, longer life spans, better sex lives and the reduction of pain – overall quality of life is our goal. Pilates and Gyrotonic will make you look better and feel better about your body, and is a superb foundation for other types of activities and movement.
Q. What Makes ShapeShift workout unique?
A: ShapeShift Pilates gives you a comprehensive workout that has a positive holistic effect on every one of our clients. While our methods can be extremely healing and rehabilitative, they are also challenging for the more athletic person. Our attention to detail is meticulous and our staff is unparalleled – we take painstaking measures to ensure that our clients are matched up with the right instructor. We constantly innovate the workout to make sure that our clients never plateau and always feel challenged, while continuously enhancing the mind/body connection. We also nurture the exercise phobic into enjoying movement and the client who needs TLC when needing exercise rehabilitation.
Q: What does a private session at ShapeShift consist of?
A: A private session at ShapeShift is 60 minutes long and tailored specifically to the individual needs and fitness level of each client. Depending on the client, we may start out on the Reformer, move to some mat work or onto the Chair, Pedipole, Ladder Barrel, roll, ball or Cadillac, and then conclude the session with stretching. At each session, we assess what is happening and then proceed with the workout by warming up the body then moving into the appropriate routine for that specific client.
Q: What are the benefits of doing Pilates and Gyrotonic?
A: Doing Pilates and Gyrotonic regularly will have a great effect on your overall conditioning. Our workouts improve strength, flexibility and balance, while challenging your core like nothing else. Pilates requires you to focus on your form, which enhances body awareness and helps to build self-confidence. The movement helps to create a stronger, more flexible spine and increases range of motion. Pilates can offer relief from back pain and helps to restore postural alignment.
In addition, Pilates also has wide-ranging benefits on your overall well-being. Working out at ShapeShift will reduce stress and boost energy, while improving stamina and mobility. It improves circulation, increases neuromuscular activity and enhances our metabolic functions. Regular practice results in a long, strong body like that of a dancer or gymnast.
Practicing Pilates can reverse a downward spiral and launch you into a whole new level of fitness and assist you in achieving a change you’ve always wanted – or at least move you in the right direction.
Q: How quickly can one get in shape?
A: Our creator, Joseph Pilates, said that in 10 sessions you will feel a difference. In 20, you will see a difference. In 30, you will have a whole new body. This is definitely true at ShapeShift. After just one session, you will feel the potential the Pilates method holds for you. After 10 sessions, you will be more energized and start to feel your abdominals working more deeply. What we have seen over the years is first you will feel so much better, then others will start to see the changes in you and then you will begin to see the changes in yourself.
Q: What are some of the more specific changes your body will have?
A: Pilates helps to sculpt and tone the body while building long, lean muscles, resulting in a taller, more toned appearance. You will see improved definition in your arms and core and an uplifted rear. The more you practice at ShapeShift, the harder and more efficiently your body works. The muscles are continuously challenged to work harder so you feel it more and are constantly progressing. It will strengthen the foundation for your abs and back, and once those are connected, conditioned and stronger, you will feel the difference inside and see it outside. Practicing at ShapeShift also helps to better align your body, improving posture and the way you carry yourself in daily activities.
Q: Do you have to be in good shape to take Pilates or Gyrotonic?
A: You do not have to be in good shape to start practicing at ShapeShift! We train clients of all ages and levels of fitness, from teenagers needing to build self-esteem and post-natal mothers to professional athletes rehabilitating injuries and elderly adults working to maintain flexibility. Many of our instructors have special experience working with those recovering from injuries or surgeries including hip replacement, knee replacement, scoliosis, Fibromyalgia, Multiple Sclerosis, obesity, anorexia, Osteoporosis, depression, and fused spines.
Q: What should be worn (or not worn)?
A: Wear something comfortable, but not too loose. Clothing does not need to be tight – we just need to be able to see your muscles clearly. We ask that clients wear socks at all times in the studio. Please do not wear any perfumes or scented lotions as some people are highly allergic.
